RTS Simulator (parody)
Made for the Bigmode Game Jam 2023 which had the theme "mode"
How to play:
RTS Simulator plays like most RTSs except theres an increased focus on micro management of your units. For example a worker doesn't automatically return their resource they just mined., you must command them to do so.
If you are unfamiliar with the RTS genre, the game plays by you controlling your units to kill the opponent's units. At times you will be required to control your workers to mine resources, which you can use to build soldiers.
Maps are broken into two types, one where you must kill the entire enemy team to win and others where you must destroy the enemy trade houses.
Controls:
Left click - selects
Right click - commands
W, A, S, D - moves camera
Q, E, R, F - abilities
1-0 - control group
1-0x2 - centers map
cmd + 1-0 - sets control group
Inspiration:
I was inspired to create this game out of my love for the RTS genre. RTS games at their best can be intense, fun, and exhilarating and at their worst pedantic micro management games centered on rewarding meaningless actions. This game was originally created to explore the "meaningless micro" side of the genre. But the more I doubled down on that the more frustrating the game became. For example the original concept included a sleep feature, which forced the player to constantly select a units otherwise the it would start to fall asleep. Funny yes, but gameplay wise very infuriating. Ultimately I focused the game down more on the fun side of microing creating a series of arena battles forcing the player to out micro an AI.
Theme of "Mode":
One definition of Mode is "a way or manner in which something occurs or is experienced, expressed, or done". My game explores one of my favorite genres, RTS. Most RTS games and players are stuck in a mode of play that is antiquated and results in the game being less about tactics and strategy and more about your ability to preform a large number of often very meaningless actions. The game company Relic coined the term "Meaningful Micro" to describe their attempt to create an opposite experience. However much of the RTS community rails against this idea.
TLDR; My game explores the mode of play RTS users say they want in the game and attempts to make light hearted fun of it. :) I'm doubling down on the meaningless micro here a bit, but not so much to make the game dull.
